I was just thinking about this last week. I was hanging a trail camera in a new spot I plan on hunting this year. I had already hiked a couple miles through some dense foliage and overgrown fields looking for deer sign. My hat and shirt were soaked in sweat and there was a cloud of mosquitoes and gnats flying around my face. I kept pausing from adjusting the strap on the camera to swat the ones biting me. I thought at that moment that I can't wait for winter.
When most people think of summer, they think of laying on the beach, swimming in pools, and camping. When I think of summer, I think of stifling heat and humidity, poison ivy rashes, sunburns, flies on my food, chigger bites, and mosquitoes buzzing in my ears. You could say I'm not a fan of summer. When the temperature drops, all those things I dislike go away. That's when I really get to enjoy spending time outdoors. My favorite part is walking through the woods, in the dark, with a tree stand on my back and a bow in my hand. The sound of my boots crunching on the frozen leaves and seeing my breath in the beam of my headlamp. Better yet is on mornings when there's snow on the ground and the moon overhead, the woods are so lit up that you don't need a light. When it's really cold I try to stay in my stand all day because those are the days when the deer are up on their feet moving. Even if I don't get the chance to let an arrow fly, it makes for an exciting hunt. Then when the sun goes down I make the trip back through the frozen woods, drive home, and sit by the fireplace to thaw my frozen hands and feet. Then I repack and check my gear to do it all over again the next day. That is what I'm looking forward to this season.

This year holds some new exitement for me. My grandsons will be coming over to Webster county to hunt the youth season on my neighbors place. I am hoping that they will put their first deer on the ground using my newly acquired 7mm-08 and my wifes 243. They have a very good chance of getting their first deer this year.
Then there is the opportunity for my wife and I to go to my Cousin's place in northern Indiana and hunt on the four different properties that he manages. He has several tree stands already in place, four blinds and three shooting houses. Indiana regulations allow a hunter to use a crossbow during the regular archery season. If we go during the archery season I will be buying my wife a new crossbow. If not, we will be going during the latter part of firearms season which coincides with Missouri's firearms season. "Bummer"
My wife just recently got into deer hunting and hasn't had the opportunity to take a shot yet. I've been dreaming of sitting in a blind with her in Indiana and rattling up a monster buck for her to shoot with a crossbow.
Also, Indiana changed their regulations so a hunter can now use a centerfire rifle chambered in the common pistol cartridges.
I own an old Thompson center Thunderhawk muzzleloader that is very accurate that will be going with me along with my 44 magnum Ruger SBH. I'll have to find something for my wife to use. Probably a 44 magnum rifle. She doesn't like my muzzleloader because of recoil.
I had a new rest put on my Martin bow today at Bass Pro. I went from a whisker biscut to a NAP Apache fall away. I'm sure my groups are gonna get much tighter. I also had new blazer vanes put on my arrows.
I purchased a Summit Goliath climbing stand about a month ago that is replacing my Summit Viper. I'm looking forward to using that Goliath with two more inches of width inside the seat frame and a much more comfortable seat.
I have been reloading my own ammo for over 20 years but, got into casting my own bullets this past year. I bought an old Model 94 30-30 Winchester and discovered that it absolutely loves the Lyman 173 grain bullets. It will consistantly shoot 1 3/4 inch groups at 75 yards using the peep sight. This will definately be my still hunting rig for the mountain back home. I also got some great cast bullet loads made for my 357 magnum and 44 magnum pistols.
Anyways, as you can see I got a lot of prep work done, some new equipment to use and many great opportunities to assist my wife and grandsons in taking their first deer. It don't get much better than this!
Good luck everybody!!!
