It’s the first day of rifle season and its 20 degrees, there is a dense fog that isn’t going to lift for the next 3 days. This buck is chasing a doe and they are both about 25 yards away. They are both running do you shoot or do you pass? Where do you aim?

I would pass on the little doe no matter what and also the buck as long as he was running. If I could not get the buck to stop for a second, for a decent shot by giving him a grunt, then he would also go on his merry way with the doe. But at 25 yards, if he were to pause just for a second, a neck shot on the buck or if not presented correctly, a lung shot. I do not really prefer a shoulder shot normally, but I would not take a shoulder shot at close range unless I was using a heavily constructed bullet that would give complete penetration. Many cup and core bullets will not penetrate at close range on a shoulder due to the high velocity impact on heavy bone and a possible long tracking session could certainly result with the deer traveling a long distance on three legs. I know that this can happen from first hand experience with both positive as well as negative results in the past. On a long range shot, I would normally pick the shoulder shot as the normal cup and core bullets will penetrate better at reduced velocity. Bullet construction is important and must be considered with every situation.

First day? If I got the whole season off to hunt in good areas, I'll watch and learn. If I only have a couple days to hunt, I'd aim right in the middle of the shoulder of the buck and squeeeeeze the trigger.
